DUH nurse Perry, MLK award winner, to speak on her disaster relief work in Haiti

On Thursday, Feb., 11, April Perry, a clinical nurse educator for Duke HomeCare & Hospice and winner of the 2010 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Caregiver Award, will speak from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in Duke North 2002.
Perry has done relief work in Haiti for 10 years. She and her medical team were among the first healthcare providers in Haiti six days after the earthquake. Having just returned from 10 days of disaster relief there, Perry will provide a firsthand account of the challenges and implications for providing medical care in post-earthquake Haiti.
Topics presented will include:
• Types of medical injuries typically seen and treated in this situation
• Challenges encountered in providing medical care in disasters of this scale
• Long-term implications for healing and rehabilitation of those injured
• Impact for the rebuilding of the country
At the conclusion of this presentation, participants will be able to:
• Describe two problems medical personnel deal with while providing disaster relief/medical care in Haiti.
• Identify two implications for injuries seen in the immediate aftermath which will have long-term consequences.
