Duke Medicine events celebrate M.L. King Jr.‘s life, legacy

January 14

Lecture by North Carolina NAACP President Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II

In the spirit of the theme, “Building Community Leaders,” Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II will present a lecture in Duke Hospital’s Searle Center Lecture Hall. Also, join us for an original play by students from Hillside High School’s award-winning drama program. Lunch will be served. Seating is limited, and registration is required.

Duke Medicine employees are invited to the Searle Center Lecture Hall any time from 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. on Friday, January 15 to view the award-winning series “Eyes on the Prize.” The Friday showing will feature the second half of this compelling, 14-hour documentary, narrated by Civil Rights Leader Julian Bond. The video includes archival footage from throughout the Civil Rights movement along with interviews and commentaries from many participants in the movement. Staff from Duke Hospital’s MLK Commemoration Committee will be on site throughout the event to welcome participants. Light refreshments will be provided. Please drop by as time allows. No registration required.

On Wednesday, Jan. 20, the Department of Pastoral Services will celebrate the life and legacy of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The 6th floor chapel will be staffed from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. There will be videos displaying some of King's speeches, other memorabilia and a place to sign in. There will be a special soloist and presenter from 1:15 p.m. until 2:15 p.m. Please contact Chaplain Roger Velasquez or Chaplain Cary Melvin if you are interested in participating in this celebratory event.
