posted April 13th, 2010Three Upcoming Events to Focus on Handling Grief, Celebrating Life:
* Remembering and Honoring Our Grief at Work. Staff are invited to a time of community, prayer, meditation, music and a focus on grief and hope to reflect on the losses of co-workers, family members, friends and others. Thursday, April 29, 2-7 p.m., 1308 Duke North (Duke Hospital Administrative Conference Room).
Reading of the n.ames of recent Duke employee deaths -- Kevin Sowers, RN, MSN, FAAN, president, Duke University Hospital, 2:30-3 p.m., includes poetry, music and a Blessing of the Hands - Chaplain staff.
* Hospital-Wide Service of Remembrance. Sunday, May 2, 11 a.m.–1 p.m., Sarah P. Duke Gardens. Families who experienced the death of a loved one at the Hospital between August 2009 and Jan. 31, 2010, are being invited to attend the service. Duke Hospital staff are also invited and are encouraged to attend, particularly staff who may have worked with the patients who are being remembered at the service. Staff who would like to attend or volunteer are asked to call 684-4750 or e-mail: bereavement@mc.duke.edu.
* Grief in the Workplace: Helping Employees Cope with End-of-Life and Other Loss Issues. An open enrollment class for managers and supervisors offered through Duke HR - Learning and Organizational Development. Grief is expressed physically, emotionally, psychologically and spiritually. Effects of workplace grief range from absenteeism to errors on the job to substance/alcohol abuse. Managers and supervisors can effectively confront this issue by learning to recognize signs and symptoms of grief, explore strategies for responding in a caring way, and know about resources, workplace policies and procedures and referral programs.
