‘Mum’s the Word’ campaign starts Oct. 5
posted September 28th, 2009The 15th-annual “Mum’s the Word” Confidentiality Campaign, sponsored by the Health Information Management Department (HIM), will be held Oct. 5-9, 2009.
The purpose of the campaign is to continue to raise staff awareness of the patient’s right to have their health information held private and our obligation as employees of the Duke Health System to protect that right. All employees are required to sign the confidentiality agreement form on an annual basis.
Mums plants will be delivered to the approved Duke North nursing units and Duke South clinics on Monday, Oct. 5. Information tables will be manned outside of Duke North and Duke South cafeterias and in the PRT lobby on Oct. 6 (Tuesday) and Oct. 9 (Friday) from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Peoeple who stop at the information tables are encouraged to take a privacy tip card to reinforce knowledge of principles of confidentiality and privacy.
Take this opportunity to focus on the importance of keeping patient records confidential and remember that:
1. If the information is not needed to do your job as it relates to treatment, payment, or operations it should not be accessed.
2. You are responsible for anything accessed under your password.
3. Do not look up information on friends or family members.
4. Never leave chart unattended in the hallways.
5. Never share passwords.
6. Never discuss patient information in the halls or on the elevator.
7. DUHS can and does conduct random audits access on patient records and has been consistently disciplining employees who have breached confidentiality.
