National Start! Walking Day events to take place April 7th around Duke Medicine

On Wednesday, April 7, the American Heart Association will hold their National Start! Walking Day event - a national program that encourages employees to adopt a comprehensive walking and nutrition program in order to live healthier, longer lives. Duke Medicine employees are invited to wear sneakers or walking shoes to work on April 7 and to join together in a lunchtime or evening walk event.

  Because Duke Medicine is so large and geographically dispersed, nine walks will be held at six locations. 

         * PRMO – 11 a.m. Warm-up at 11:05 a.m. Meet at the main entrance for a 1.1 mile walk.

         * Durham Regional Hospital – 11:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. Join us at the employee entrance for a 1-mile walk around the perimeter of the hospital grounds. A presentation for Shape Up Duke winners will take place at noon.

        * Duke Hospital (Duke Gardens) - 12 p.m. gather at the lower end of parking lot at the Doris Duke Center for a 1.2 mile walk through Duke Gardens. Visit our Farmer’s Market – bring extra $ for veggies, plants and more! (See flier for details.) The Terrace Shop at Duke Gardens will provide a 15% discount to all employees from 11-2 p.m. Also on site: 9th Street Active Feet, Rubberbanditz, Gracie’s Gear and Girls on the Run.

        * Duke Raleigh Hospital – 11:00 a.m. & 12 noon. Meet on the front lawn for a 1-mile walk around the medical campus.

Evening walks, provided by LIVE FOR LIFE®:

         * Durham Regional – Meet at 5 p.m. at the employee entrance for a 1-mile walk.

         * East Campus wall – Meet at 5:30 p.m. for a 1.7 mile walk.

         * Wallace Wade Stadium/West campus – Meet at 5:30 p.m. for a 2.9 mile walk.

         * PRMO – Meet at 5:00 p.m. at the main entrance for a 1.1 mile walk.

New this year:

         * Duke Hospital has a new starting location: the Doris Duke Center

         * Preview the Duke Mobile Market – bring along some extra cash to purchase local produce, herbs and flowers.

         * Area mascots may be at your walk location! Be on the lookout for Stormy and the Storm Squad, Duke’s Trauma Roo and members of the Duke cheerleading team as they support walking for a healthier lifestyle.

         * PRMO attendees must register, but others do not need to do so. Please come out and join the fun!
