The Duke Perinatal Loss Committee hosted the Perinatal Loss Memorial Bench Dedication ceremony Wednesday, June 15. The ceremony, held in the garden courtyard outside of Duke Hospital, was a gathering of staff members to recognize the dedication of a contemplation bench in honor of all patient families who have experienced the loss of a baby.

A dulcimer provided a peaceful background melody as those offering remembrance gathered around the memorial area. This area includes a contemplation bench with a commemorative plaque that says, “Remembering the babies who left us too soon…” Also, a small statue of a sleeping baby in wings sits within a small garden beside the bench.

Chaplain Annette Olsen, the Spiritual Care Manager for Women’s and Children’s Services, welcomed attendees to the memorial space that will serve as a “sanctuary for healing thoughts and meditation.” Chaplain Olsen led a beautiful song to honor the preciousness of babies lost. Kathryn Keicher, of Duke Birthing Center Social Work, shared a few words about the special meaning of the memorial and the impassioned vision of those involved in its creation.
Beth Remsburg-Bell, Director of Women’s Services, took a moment to speak on behalf of all those involved in the long journey that finally led to the fruition of the memorial corner. The area represents the compassion and empathy needed during the time of loss. Families, loved ones, staff and others grieving can use this devotion area for remembrance and reflection. Suzy Blalock, Decedent Care Representative, read aloud a poem chosen by the Perinatal Loss Committee titled “Rest Gently with Me,” which included imagery about wings and nature to dovetail with the sleeping baby in wings statue.

To conclude the ceremony, each member of the Perinatal Loss Committee shared a line from the litany “We Remember Them.” The powerful words highlighted the ongoing journey of remembering the lives lost. In conclusion, attendees were given a white rose to place on the contemplation bench in honor of patients and families who have experienced the loss of a baby. Those in attendance shared embraces after the ceremony, marking the memorial as a healing place of hope for the future.
