Registration deadline today for DUH MLK event

This month we will honor a legacy of service and leadership in the community as we celebrate the annual Duke University Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration. Duke Hospital’s planned events include a leadership workshop, the presentation of the 2010 MLK Community Caregiver Award by Dr. William J. Fulkerson and a lecture by North Carolina NAACP President Dr. William J. Barber. Duke Hospital department heads are asked to register to attend at least one of these events, listed below, and are also asked to encourage your employees to attend these events. Deadline for registration is today, Thursday, January 7, 2010.

How to Register

Due to limited space, events are open to staff and physicians who work at Duke University Hospital and DHTS.

There are three ways to register:

Staff and physicians who are not on ActiveStaffer will need to send an e-mail to educate@mc.duke.edu to register. The e-mail will need to include the session you would like to attend, your name and unique ID.

January 11
Volunteer Leadership Workshop - AM Session

Grinnell Leadership was founded by Dr. John Grinnell in order to provide the highest quality creative leadership and organizational development consulting services to an array of businesses, industries, governmental organizations, educational institutions and individuals. Grinnell’s definition of leadership reveals their philosophy: Leadership is responsibility with integrity, perspective and courage.

Join Dr. John Grinnell himself as part of a leadership workshop that will help enhance your ability to lead volunteer efforts in the community.

Participants will be asked to take a 60-90-minute, online assessment prior to attending the workshop. The time for the assessment will be unpaid.

Following the workshop, their leadership in the community will be tracked in stories and pictures over the next year, to showcase the impact that even a small number of dedicated individuals can have on the community.

Each session is limited to 50 eligible registrants, so reserve your space early. Registration is open to employees from Duke Hospital, the School of Medicine, Ambulatory Services and PRMO.

Nine employees from Duke Hospital, the School of Medicine, Ambulatory Services or PRMO were nominated for the second Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Caregiver Award. Dr. William J. Fulkerson, senior vice president for clinical affairs for Duke University Health System, will announce the name of the winner and will present an award of $5,000 to the organization for which she volunteers. Lunch will be served. Seating is limited, and registration is required.


January 13
Eyes on the Prize Video – Session I
Noon-7:00 p.m.
Searle Center Lecture Hall
No registration required.
Duke Medicine employees are invited to the Searle Center Lecture Hall any time from Noon-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 13 to view the award-winning series “Eyes on the Prize.” The Wednesday showing will feature the first half of this compelling, 14-hour documentary, narrated by Civil Rights Leader Julian Bond. The video includes archival footage from throughout the Civil Rights movement along with interviews and commentaries from many participants in the movement. Staff from Duke Hospital’s MLK Commemoration Committee will be on site throughout the event to welcome participants. Light refreshments will be provided. Please drop by as time allows. No registration required.

In the spirit of the theme, “Building Community Leaders,” Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II will present a lecture in Duke Hospital’s Searle Center Lecture Hall. Also, join us for an original play by students from Hillside High School’s award-winning drama program. Lunch will be served. Seating is limited, and registration is required.
