Use Duke box numbers in internal mail and mail coming to Duke
posted March 25th, 2011Michael Trogdon, Director of Postal Operations:
Duke Postal Operations processes over 2,000 pieces of mail a day that does not include the Duke box number. We depend on those Duke box numbers to get U.S. Postal Service mail and interdepartmental mail to its destination (and even some mail coming in from private carriers, like FedEx and UPS).
So, we need your help. Please inform everyone in your organization that they must include their box numbers when giving their address out to others. We recommend always using a combined address that includes both the physical address and the box number to be sure you are covered regardless of which carrier is used by people who send you mail. Including the box number on business cards and in e-mail signature blocks are great ways to get the required information into the hands of others. And please stress to everyone -- and especially to staff assistants and other personnel who handle large volumes of mail -- that they must include the box number on every piece of interdepartmental/campus mail they send.
After April 15, we will return to the sender all mail that does not include a Duke box number.
For information on how to find box numbers and how to address mail properly, see the Duke Postal Operations site.
