The Nancy Weaver Emerson Lectureship in Medical Ethics was established in 1997 to honor Nancy Weaver Emerson whose legacy shows us that patients can be our most courageous and extraordinary partners in advancing cancer research, treatment, education and policy. The endowment brings nationally known speakers to Duke University to address important ethical issues in medicine.

Jeremy Sugarman, MD, MPH, MA

Dr. Sugarman's work includes the ethics of informed consent, umbilical cord blood banking, stem cell research, international HIV prevention research, and research oversight.

He is the author of over 200 publications, editor of four books, and serves on numerous editorial and policy advisory boards. He was the founding director of the Trent Center for Bioethics, Humanities and History of Medicine at Duke University.

Lawrence Kaplow

Lawrence Kaplow is a television writer and producer most notable for his work on the FOX series House, MDwhere he is currently consulting producer.

He has been nominated for several Emmy Awards and won the 2005 Writers Guild of America Award for "Outstanding Television Script, Episodic Drama" for theHouse, MD episode "Autopsy" (2.02). In addition, Mr. Kaplow has written for Family Law, Hack and K-Ville.
