Location: RENCI headquarters, 100 Europa Drive, Chapel Hill, 5th Floor East

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is the most common type of radiation therapy, and in the United States it is most frequently used to treat prostate cancer. Given the prevalence of prostate cancer, improving prostate IMRT is a topic of great clinical significance. The research team, led by Joseph Lo, of the Department of Radiology at Duke University School of Medicine and Shiva Das, radiation oncologist at the School of Medicine, has accrued a large knowledge base of over 400 prostate cancer cases from three institutions. Using this knowledge base, their goal is to match each new patient with patients in the database with similar imaging data.

This presentation will provide an overview of the clinical problem and the team’s knowledge-based approach to developing new radiotherapy plans, including a visualization tool created by RENCI senior research software developer Steve Chall.
