Taking Control of Your Diabetes, May 22
May 22nd, 2010The Taking Control of Your Diabetes (TCOYD) Conference and Health Fair will be held May 22, 2010 at the Raleigh Convention Center, bringing national and local medical experts in diabetes care to people with all types of diabetes, those at risk for diabetes and their loved ones for a day of highly educational and motivational programs.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), approximately 9% of North Carolina residents have been diagnosed with diabetes and thousands are still at risk. It is crucial that people living with the disease are given the tools to properly manage their diabetes and live a happy and healthy life.
The conference will offer leading specialists who will discuss practical advice and developments in the treatment of diabetes, the complications of the disease, psychological barriers to controlling diabetes, prevention, nutritional issues, heart disease, dental health and many other topics pertaining to diabetes care. The Taking Control of Your Diabetes conference is a collaborative effort of health professionals from major institutions and clinics including the University of North Carolina School of Medicine—Chapel Hill, Duke University Health, The University of California San Diego and Raleigh Endocrine Associates.
"Diabetes is a major health problem in North Carolina, and many people are not in control of their diabetes. Proper treatment requires daily attention to good nutrition, a medication schedule, and glucose testing. One of the keys to successful diabetes control is having strong diabetes self care management skills. Education is the cornerstone to remaining healthy with diabetes. We are delighted to have TCOYD back in Raleigh to aid in this important effort," said Conference Co-Directors Mark Feinglos, MD, CM and Janet Nicollerat, RN, CDE of Duke University Health.
TCOYD participants can hear lectures, participate in screenings and speak one-on-one with diabetes specialists including physicians, pharmacists, dietitians, certified diabetes educators, dentists and podiatrists.
“This TCOYD conference will give people an edge on the information and empowerment they need to live well with diabetes,” said Dr. Steven Edelman, Founder and Director of TCOYD.
A health fair with more than 40 informational exhibits from national and local diabetes-related companies and organizations will be open throughout the day. A banquet lunch is included and will feature special guest speaker, professional open wheel racecar driver Charlie Kimball who is living well with type 1 diabetes and a special appearance by North Carolina 2nd district Congressman Bob Etheridge. The program will close with the inspirational story of Nicole Johnson, Miss America 1999 and international diabetes advocate.
