Awards presented at annual Spring Faculty Meeting

Katherine Pereira and her School of Nursing colleagues share a toast at the Spring Faculty Meeting.

At the annual Spring Faculty Meeting, held at the Doris Duke Garden Center on May 13, 2010, the School of Medicine and School of Nursing at Duke University presented the following awards:

The Leonard B. Tow Humanism in Medicine Award was presented to Sharon Freedman, M.D., professor of Ophthalmology and Pediatrics and chief of the division of Pediatric Ophthalmology, an outstanding clinician and surgeon with a prominent international reputation for her innovative and sensitive work treating children with glaucoma. The award recognizes compassion and sensitivity in the delivery of health care.

Dean Nancy Andrews presents the Williams Faculty Research Prize to Farshid Guilak.The Ruth and A. Morris Williams Jr. Faculty Research Prize was presented to Farshid Guilak, Ph.D., the Laszlo Ormandy Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, for his work in bioartificial joint replacement. The prize recognizes groundbreaking research in basic or clinical science in alternate years; this year, the prize is for clinical science research. The Leonard Palumbo Jr., M.D.Faculty Achievement Award was presented to Anthony Galanos, M.D., associate professor of medicine and medical director of the Palliative Care Consult Service, for his perseverance and persistence in creating the Palliative Care service at Duke Hospital, where he provided the bulk of the 400 consults last year. The award recognizes a member of the School of Medicine faculty who displays dedication to compassionate patient care and excellence in the teaching and mentoring of young physicians.

The Gordon G. Hammes Faculty Teaching Award was presented to Douglas Marchuk, Ph.D., professor of molecular genetics and microbiology, and director of the University Program in Genetics and Genomics. The award recognizes continuing excellence in teaching and mentoring, and exemplary commitment to the education of graduate students within the basic science departments and graduate training programs of the School of Medicine.

Allan Friedman, M.D., Joseph Rogers, M.D., and Andrea B. Taylor, Ph.D. received Master Clinician/Teacher awards, which honor individuals with superlative accomplishment and service in the areas of clinical care and teaching.

The School of Nursing recognized the following awards that were presented previously: Margaret “Midge” T. Bowers, MSN, R.N., assistant clinical professor, received the Distinguished Teaching Award, Beth Cusatis Phillips, MSN BSN, assistant clinical professor, received the Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award and Susan Denman, Ph.D., R.N., FNP-C, associate clinical professor and Family Nurse Practitioner Specialty director, received the Outstanding Faculty Member Award.
