Victor J. Dzau, M.D., chancellor for health affairs and CEO for DUHS, sends his best wishes for the holiday season to all Duke Medicine employees:

“As we approach the holidays and anticipate enjoying time with family, loved ones, and friends, I wanted to send along my best wishes for a restful and joyous season.

“Despite the unprecedented national and world events that have unfolded recently, this has been another great year for Duke Medicine that was characterized by the delivery of outstanding medical care, significant scientific research discoveries, and excellent training of the next generation of physician leaders. We have much to be proud of and to be thankful for.

“I have been particularly impressed by the way that both schools, their faculties and staff, and the leadership and staff throughout the health system, have pulled together to address the pressures that have begun to emerge as a result of the economic and financial crisis.

“As I have said before, I believe we are as well prepared as any academic medical center in the country to address and adapt to the challenges that we face as a result of the current situation. However, it is clear that this crisis is far from over and there is no way to accurately predict its trajectory or duration, and how it might ultimately impact our operations.

“It will be imperative that we all return from the holiday break rested and ready to creatively meet the challenges that lie ahead. I have great confidence in our faculties, our staff, and our leadership teams, and am optimistic that we will pull together to do what it takes to successfully navigate the uncharted waters ahead.

“But for now, it’s time to reflect on another year in which you all have contributed to extending Duke Medicine’s legacy as one of the leading academic medical centers in the country and the world. It’s also time to enjoy all of the things that make this holiday season so special.

“Lastly, I’d also ask that we not forget the family members and loved ones of Duke Medicine employees who are deployed around the world defending our country in military service.

“Have a wonderful holiday.”
