Big changes in the works for hospital eateries

posted May 1st, 2008

In mid-April, part of the Atrium, the Duke North cafeteria, closed for renovations. This month, diners should begin to see what all the work was about. Please plan to check out new services, including a new Starbucks coffee service.

This endeavor, dubbed the WOW project, will provide significant, positive changes to cafeteria services and to the environment in the Atrium.

Changes include:

  • A new menu with ‘better-for-you’ selections
  • Additional infection-control barriers for food
  • New surfaces and new colors.

Now, the work shifts to the Duke South Food Court. Over the last year, focus groups with staff and visitors have helped with plans for that eatery. Renovations will begin in the fall.

One change is already known. Hardee’s locations in Duke South and in the Children’s Health Center will close. The Hardee’s in Duke South will close May 30. A closing date for the Hardees in the Children’s Health Center has not yet been determined. Not to worry: A food venue will fill that space in the Children’s Health Center.
