Harvey Jay Cohen, M.D.Harvey Jay Cohen, M.D., will step down as chairman of the Department of Medicine as of July 1, 2009. He isn’t retiring, but will pursue academic and research interests.

He will pursue academic and research interests in aging, functional decline and geriatric hematology/oncology in his continuing roles as director of the Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development and as PI of the Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Center.

“The past eight years are clear evidence of Harvey’s deep commitment to Duke as he voluntarily put his own research and academic interest on the back burner in order to assist in various important leadership roles in the department of medicine,” said Nancy Andrews, M.D., Ph.D., dean of the School of Medicine. “I’m extremely grateful to Harvey for this exemplary level of education.”

Joe St. Geme, M.D., chairman of the Department of Pediatrics, will lead a search committee to identify candidates to replace Cohen. The goal of the committee, which still is being assembled, is to have the next chair of medicine on board by the summer of 2009.
