The upper level of the permanent concourse connecting Duke Hospital and Duke Clinic is now complete and will open for pedestrian traffic on Tuesday, November 1. The enclosed and climate-controlled concourse is an important step toward improving the way patients, visitors and staff move between clinical facilities. The timing is ideal as we are beginning to experience cooler temperatures as winter approaches.
The new concourse will run along the back of Duke Hospital on Level 3, past the Duke Medicine Pavilion, and continue onto Level 2 of the Duke Clinic. All pedestrian traffic will use this level of the concourse until a lower level concourse is completed to coincide with the opening of the Duke Medicine Pavilion in July 2013.
Ample signage will be posted through Duke Hospital, the concourse and in Duke Clinic to help guide patients, family members and staff through the space. The temporary walkway that has been used as the connector between these buildings over the past year will be demolished.
To access the new pedestrian concourse connecting Level 3 of Duke Hospital with Level 2 of Duke Clinic:
- From Duke Hospital, a new bank of elevators and stairs near the cafeteria will provide access to the new concourse on Level 3.
- From Duke Clinic, the elevators and stairs near Clinic 1A will route all pedestrian traffic from Level 1 of Duke Clinic to access the new concourse on Level 2, near the oncology treatment center.
Access to the Seeley G. Mudd Building will be available via the existing temporary walkway near the Level 1 Mars Gallery in the back hallway of Duke Hospital. The temporary walkway from the Seeley G. Mudd Building to Duke Clinic will be removed as construction will soon begin on the new outdoor plaza between the Duke Medicine Pavilion, the Learning Center and the Seeley G. Mudd Building.
