Dear Doctor, On that long trek to work this AM I was listening to EWTN on the radio and heard that you had won the Nobel prize in Chemistry this year. They did not say that you were a Duke Doctor, because that would have really caught my ear. Congratulations Sir. I know your brain is traveling up there in unchartered territories. I’m just a little old, humble,  nurse here in this underground city.  I can honesestly say I am proud to be a Duke nurse. Dear Dr. Lefkowitz,
I still remember with vivid clarity my excitement in 1982, when as a first year medical student at Duke. I heard you lecture to the physiology class on beta-receptors. Despite the fast pace of the presentation, I found the story and style so compelling that is has stuck with me all these years, intermittenly bolstered by following your subsequent related work. In fact, your work and style stimulated me during many years of autonomic physiology work at MIT and Children’s Hospital, Boston. It wasn’t long after that lecture in 1982 that I began to believe you would some day win a Nobel Prize in physiology. I guess the Nobel committee finally figured it out one way or the other!
I join heartily in the congratulations,
    Phil
