Duke Raleigh Hospital and Wake Technical Community College partnered for a career panel

Duke Raleigh Hospital employees spoke to students and members of the community about their careers and the importance of diversity in the workforce.

The Duke Raleigh Hospital Diversity Leadership Team and the Diversity Committee at Wake Technical Community College hosted a Minority Healthcare Panel on Saturday, February 27. The panel included Duke Raleigh employees from various departments within the hospital. The event highlighted healthcare careers and diversity issues within the field.

Students were exposed to many traditional and non-traditional career opportunities within healthcare.

Hai Ly Burk, social worker at Duke Raleigh moderated and organized the panel. Attendees were given the opportunity to ask panelists questions, and participate in breakout sessions.

“The passion that the panelists demonstrated for their profession was incredible,” said Burk. “They provided honest insights about their jobs and what skills are needed to be leaders in the healthcare field. These leaders also demonstrated their commitment to the community by sacrificing their Saturday morning to participate in this event”

The feedback from the event was positive, and there are plans to sponsor the event again next year.

“I want all the panelists to know how grateful our hospital is to them for being role models in their respective professions," said Doug Vinsel, president of Duke Raleigh.

The panel participants were:

Jenny Yu - Pharmacy
James Smith - IT
Jacqueline Brown - Marketing
Tabitha Greenlee - Social Work
Velma Champlain - Spiritual Care
Wanda Roman - Nursing/PICC team
