End in sight: Work on Cancer Center winding down
posted January 17th, 2012
Aerial views of Duke's medical campus from 2009 and 2011 show how construction has progressed.
The vision is very close to becoming reality.
On Jan. 23, the construction contractor literally handed over the keys to the 267,000-square-foot Duke Cancer Center facility.
“The construction phase is now complete, and in that sense it is an important milestone,” said Shawn Subasic, director of design and construction for the Cancer Center. “The effort of many people, and lot of really great teamwork over the last few years, has brought us to this important point. Excitement is really building toward the opening in February.”
Work inside the Cancer Center continued during the holiday period, with crews completing interior construction as well as installing computer equipment and furniture.
The project is one part of a major transformation of the medical campus that includes construction of the Duke Medicine Pavilion and the Learning Center. The accompanying aerial photos give an insight into how much has been accomplished since faculty, staff, administrators and dignitaries participated in Cancer Center groundbreaking ceremonies on Nov. 6, 2009.
From then to Jan. 23, the estimated hand-over date, just 811 days will have passed. And Jan. 23 is just 36 days before Feb. 27, when the first patients arrive at the new Cancer Center facility.
