‘Great’ Scott, Mayfield!

Durham Regional and Watts School of Nursing Nurses Win Statewide Award

Durham Regional Hospital nurse Carolyn Scott and Watts School of Nursing instructor Myrtle Mayfield were named to the 2008 list of Great 100 Nurses. The Great 100 awards nurses who exemplify excellence in practice and commitment to the nursing profession.

The committee looks for those who have promoted and advanced the nursing profession in a positive way, display commitment to patients, families and colleagues, demonstrate caring and assist others to grow and develop, and have made contributions to overall outcomes in the practice setting.

Carolyn Scott, RN, of Durham Regional Hospital’s Radiation Oncology Department has been with the hospital for over 20 years. Scott, a Rougemont resident, is recognized as routinely going above and beyond for extraordinary patient care. She has received many awards for excellence in nursing including the Friends of Nursing Award and Most Valuable Partner Award from Durham Regional Hospital. Scott was also awarded the Professional Care Giver of the Year Award by Relay for Life in May 2008. Scott is a member of many professional organizations, including the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology and the Oncology Nursing Society.

“I feel I have been given a gift which I love to share. I enjoy my coworkers and helping patients. I felt very humbled when I found out I had been chosen,” says Scott.

Myrtle Mayfield, RN, BSN, MEd, teaches Maternal/ Child Nursing and is also the Labor and Delivery clinical instructor at Watts School of Nursing. Mayfield, a Durham resident has been working at Watts and Durham Regional for over 29 years. She has also won a number of awards including the Lois Cox Award for dedication and caring toward students and patients, Most Valued Partner Award from Durham Regional Hospital and the Safe Sitter Recognition Award. Mayfield was also chosen as a candidate to represent Cambodia in Women and Children’s Health by President Bush in 2007.

“My greatest accomplishments have been designing and teaching the Specialty Training Program for Labor and Delivery, working as a curriculum member to make changes to the school and educating students to become nurses. It is very rewarding watching them mature through their training at Watts, seeing them graduate, then going on to become excellent nurses,” says Mayfield. “I felt shocked and very honored when I heard that I had been chosen as a Great 100 nurse.”
