Helen Cuccaro: Providing service to others

posted May 17th, 2010

Helen Cuccaro, an administrative assistant, demonstrates service to others, according to Karen Silverberg, associate dean for HR, Faculty Promotions, Appointments and Tenure.

"You can find her in the hallway just helping people along the way," Silverberg said of Cuccaro.

"The other day I was going down to the Physical Therapy office and I saw a gentlemen walking with a cane and an eye patch," Cuccaro said. "And I said, 'Could I help you?' He put his arm around me and said, 'Come on, you're walking me to where I need to go.' So, that was pretty nice."

"The commitment that we see from Helen and many others here at Duke, is taking responsibility from your own behaviors and your actions," Silverberg said. "The ability to bring that behavior and that action forward really shows what we are all about and that's service to others."

Cuccaro encourages others to "pick your head up and look at people that you are walking by. Say hi. Just by saying hi, they might say, 'oh can you help me?' ."
