In this story about one family's struggle to find a match for a son who needs a bone marrow transplant to treat his leukemia, Joanne Kurtzberg, M.D., director of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program, talks about the need for more public cord blood banking facilitated by hospitals.
"Medical waste can be turned around and save someone else's life,” she said. "It would be fantastic if hospitals were equipped and staffed to collect cord blood for public donations, if mothers wanted to donate, but right now that's not the situation in the United States."
