Meet a great nurse: Jayne Cash

posted October 26th, 2009

Jayne Cash is one of 10 DUHS nurses who received the Great 100 Award this year, a statewide recognition program honoring 100 registered nurses who exemplify nursing excellence.

Here are some comments about Jayne from her Great 100 nominator: "She is one of the most sincere, honest, and trustworthy nurses that I’ve had the distinct pleasure of working with over my own 35 years of nursing. In returning the very first phone call to a distraught and anxious parent, she immediately establishes trust and confidence. With her calm and reassuring voice and presence, she is ALWAYS honest with parents so they know what to expect. For those children who go through the entire transplant process and are eventually discharged home, shecontinues to be the nurse that parents stay in touch with and to whom they go whenever they need help navigating the complexities of a healthcare system. A recent example of this is when almost 5 years out from transplant, a teenage boy was having difficulty with his vision. His mother had been able to arrange an eye exam for him, but she could not afford the glasses that he needed. She called JC inquiring as to whether she knew of any resources, or where they might find help. JC contacted one of our ophthalmologists, who in turn worked with his office staff to provide a free pair of prescription glasses to this young man. JC could easily have done nothing since the child and family were back in their community and he was doing well. But because families know that she is so dependable and helpful, and because she is just one of those incredibly caring people, she utilized her resources to help this family (while never calling attention to herself for what she had done)."

Each of DUHS' Great 100 is dedicated, talented, knowledgeable. You'll be meeting them individually in Inside Online videos in the near future.

Mary Ann Fuchs, chief nursing officer and patient care services officer at DUHS, said the Great 100 winners are a testament to the impact nurses are making at work and in their communities.

“Day in and day out, nurses, like those being honored with this award, go above and beyond the call of duty to deliver innovative, extraordinary care to patients,” said Fuchs. “We are proud of their continued dedication to the nursing profession and their dedication to patient care.”
