Our Values, Our Foundation: DUHS Values
posted September 13th, 2011
Victor J. Dzau, M.D.
Chancellor for Health Affairs and CEO of DUHS
It is with great enthusiasm that I share with you a few brief thoughts about our consolidated Duke University Health System values.
While I believe faculty and staff throughout Duke Medicine consistently demonstrate an extraordinarily high commitment to the values often associated with exemplary character, having a consistent set of values as a health system is critically important. The dynamic nature of the nation’s health care delivery system and governmental research commitment is more demanding than ever, and knowing that we have a shared moral compass gives me a great sense of pride in the institution.
The care provided throughout DUHS has long been recognized for its excellence. And, as evidenced each year through the Strength, Hope and Caring awards at Duke University Hospital, and similar programs at Duke Raleigh and Durham Regional hospitals, our commitment to patients is superb.
So, while our core value of “Caring for our patients, their loved ones, and each other” is nothing new, it carries a greater degree of responsibility for all of us now that we have identified this as the health system’s preeminent commitment.
I want to assure you that as we work on our new five-year strategic plan, our decisions and directions are being fundamentally guided by a commitment to those values. I hope that you will take a few moments to read more about our values in the September 2011 issue of Inside Duke Medicine.
Inserted into each copy of Inside is a copy of these values which can be displayed prominently at your desk, work station, bulletin board or break area.
Thank you, again, for all that you do to make Duke Medicine great.
