Seminar focuses on career development
posted November 17th, 2008A professional development seminar will be held from 5:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. today in the Medical Student Amphitheater of Duke South.
The session,“Getting Mentored at Duke: Finding Your Peeps, Your Niche, and Your Voice,” is being held by the School of Medicine Office for Faculty Development.

Ann Brown, M.D., M.H.S., associate vice dean for faculty development, will lead the interactive seminar that will explore the role of mentoring in career development, and provide a practical guide to establishing successful mentoring relationships. The discussion will include information on the following:
1. Identifying your professional goals as a first step in establishing mentorship.
2. Ways of identifying potential mentors (using Duke’s Faculty Research Database [FReD], networking at national meetings, etc.).
3. Approaching potential mentors.
4. Managing relationships with your mentors.
5. Recognizing potential effects of generational differences, gender differences, and cultural differences on the mentoring relationship.
