Key Conversations in Managing Your Career
Friday, Oct. 17, 8:30-11:30 a.m. or 1-4 p.m.
(identical sessions; sign up for one)
Presented by Cathie Siders, Ph.D.
Location: School of Nursing, Room 1011
Description: This workshop experience will build the participants’ confidence in managing the difficult conversations that come up regularly in the normal course of events at work. Siders will use a combination of short tutorial, small group exercises and large group discussions to build strong negotiation skills and to confidently approach situations where there is existing or potential conflict. Participants will apply the Conflict Management Checklist to systematically analyze conflict situations. This approach emphasizes the importance of effectively managing oneself as an integral part of the conflict management process.

Getting Promoted in the Clinical Sciences at Duke: A Guide for Junior Faculty
Monday, Oct. 27, 5:30 p.m.
Presented by Ann J. Brown, MD, MHS, associate vice dean for faculty development
Location: Medical Student Amphitheater, Duke South
Description: Getting Promoted at Duke is an interactive seminar that will introduce the five different tracks for promotion in the clinical science departments. The discussion will include information on : a) the requirements for promotion on each track, b) examples of promotable achievements for each track, c) choosing a track, d) switching tracks, e) tenure clocks and the meaning of tenure, f) documenting your promotable achievements in preparation for “the dossier,” g) the promotion review timeline and review process.

Description: You’ve written a grant. You’ve gotten the pink sheet. This seminar will discuss strategies for responding to critiques and suggestions to optimize your chances for getting the re-submission funded.
