State of DUSON: ‘Healthy, thriving, on the move’

CatherineGillisIf the Duke University School of Nursing were a patient, one word would sum up its vital signs: robust.

“We’re bigger and more diverse, even as we continue to build community,” DUSON Dean Catherine Gilliss, DNSc, RN, FAAN and vice chancellor for nursing affairs, said Sept. 15 in state-of-the-school remarks delivered during the annual meeting of the school’s general assembly.

The number of students has grown 25 percent in four years. The faculty is 40 percent larger. Applications continue to rise. DUSON jumped from 29th in the 2004 U.S. News & World Report rankings to 15th in 2007. Its endowment is growing, as is its international presence.

Victor Dzau, M.D., chancellor for health affairs and president and chief executive officer of Duke University Health System, was on hand to praise DUSON and Gilliss’ leadership. Dzau also reappointed Gilliss to another term as dean.

“I can say the state of the School of Nursing is healthy, thriving and on the move with energy, enthusiasm and leadership,” Dzau said. “It’s a vital, integral part of Duke Medicine, very much in the forefront of what we’re trying to accomplish.”

The DUSON presentation will be available on DUSONnet at https://dusonnet.nursing.duke.edu/, beginning Monday, Sept. 22.
